How do you deal with life??

I’m going to make this short and sweet.

It is 4:49 a.m. and I just bounced out of bed to write a blog post.

???

It occurred to me that perhaps the reason I’ve gone from blogging almost daily to hardly at all over the last couple of months is that writing was my outlet…until I started running again.

I fell in love with distance running about ten years ago and since then have run six half-marathons and completed the training for two full marathons. (A half marathon is 13.1 miles; a full is 26.2.)

I say “completed the training for two full marathons” because I have yet to run the race itself; the first time I was severely injured during the “taper” phase two weeks before the race, and the second time I came down with pneumonia three days before the day of the race.

DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED.

Anyway.

I haven’t run much the last couple of years and was inspired to start again after Thanksgiving. I’ve now got a pretty good foundation again and am starting to increase my mileage in preparation for a half-marathon at the end of April.

I love distance running because I can just lace up my shoes and go. I can let my mind wander while I put one foot in front of the other…sometimes for hours on end depending on how many miles I plan to get in that day. It’s always been my best thinking time, and really, my best outlet when I am frustrated, mad, sad, having a bad day, have information I need to process, a problem to solve, or an issue to address.

It occurred to me as I was tossing and turning in bed with insomnia and a boat load of stuff on my mind that maybe running has taken the place of writing for me lately?

And then I started thinking.

Everyone must have an outlet of some sort…a way to cope and sort things out when needed; you know, to deal with LIFE.

If running and writing are mine, what are other peoples’ outlets?

I’m seriously curious; what are yours?

How do you people deal with life??

I have turned to sleep when anything less than peachy keen happy. I have such nocturnal Metro Goldwyn Mayer moments, they are legendary in my own mind and have proved to be a great alternative consciousness on a few occasions. It doesn’t burn as many calories ;)

Wow, Karla.

I am really jealous of your outlet! :-)

I cannot sleep when I have something on my mind (which is why I am awake at 2:00, 3:00, and 4:00 am most nights…)

Hi Stephanie – I am so happy to see your post. I definitely missed your insights and humor this last month or so. I have a couple personal outlets, learning and working out. When I find my mood and cheery disposition going South :) , it is usually because of an absence of both in my life.

Stephanie A. Lloyd February 18, 2010 at 3:05 pm

Joe,

Thanks so much for saying that! I am making a concerted effort to start blogging again more consistently. I’ve missed it; I’ve also been missing inspiration.

Obviously.

Anyway, interesting that working out is also an outlet for you. I would imagine that it probably is for a lot of people. What better way to blow off steam or just get your mind off things and focus on something that’s good for you and (literally) makes you stronger! :-)

My horse and riding is my outlet – she keeps me sane. :) Today, someone asked me for the first time to explain exactly what it is I love about horses/my horse. I couldn’t really craft a great answer. I could only say – she makes me happy and being around horses makes me feel happy. Not very succinct – but very true!

There is just something about horses – all animals, but especially horses – that is so soothing and calming…

Writing is definitely one. And cooking! Love to cook.

And like Joe, I’d say learning is an outlet that invigorates me.

Ooh!

Cooking is definitely one for me too. I love to make things that take loads of prep work like chopping, sauteing, etc. The perfect time to put on some music, have a glass of wine, and enjoy the whole experience… :-)

When life gets crazy, I power down the laptop and blackberry and just play with my children. It’s impossible to take life too seriously with glue and glitter all over your hands or while camping in the living room under tents made of blankets.

I’ve been running more lately, and that has made a difference. Today was the best outdoor run I’ve had in months – perfect temps, sunny day.
I still need to write more though….
