Yesterday Tory Johnson joined us on Dream Job Radio from her Career Expo in Chicago.
Tory is CEO, Women for Hire, and author of the best-selling book, Fired to Hired. She shared some of the advice she gives job seekers based on her own experiences and how to bounce back:
Don’t take it personally that you are unemployed! While it feels personal, remember that it was a business decision. Move on and move forward.
Avoid the “spray and pray” method; posting your resume on a job board or applying for jobs online and then sitting back and waiting for the phone to ring. It’s not going to happen!
Instead, use the internet properly – to find out who is hiring – and then spend the bulk of your time using social media to develop relationships with people who can help you.
Additionally, Tory suggested that job seekers:
- Create a digital presence – be sure that you can be found!
- Be sure that you are using Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn to connect with others
- Create a Visual CV
- Pack your week with activities
- Consider doing some strategic volunteer work
- Start/join a job club
- Seek out internships and/or externships
- Attend book signings
She also noted that when asking for help from others, be respectful of their time. Rather than asking if you can take someone to lunch or coffee, consider asking if you could have five minutes on the phone with them…and then, be sure to have your questions ready and maximize the time!
