Great advice - especially #4. Volunteering is a great way to get noticed and accomplish #3.

One thing we didn't see on the list was blogging! Sharing your opinion and getting feedback is a great way of attracting attention (could be both negative and positive) and showing what you can offer.

Another recommendation: Network Purposefully. Choose target employers, research insider connections, contact these individuals with an idea or something to intrigue them, capture their interest, pique their curiosity, follow up until you connect in real time, initiate a dialogue, cultivate a relationship, explore mutual interests which may lead to unearthing a recent opening or getting a new position created just for you.
Today's job market demands creativity, flexibility and persistence. Don't expect to simply apply to a job opening, be prepared to create a need or address one that was just waiting for you and the right timing. The hidden job market comprises two sectors: vacancies within the existing corporate job structure before they are advertised as open positions and also when a new position is added to the corporate structure just to hire a specific individual who presents a unique value proposition to the appropriate hiring decision maker.
