Introducing two new members of the Radiant Veracity team: Stephanie Perrett and Beth Farrar (from left to right) are currently working with Stephanie Lloyd as two of three communications interns. One of their weekly intern assignments is to chronicle their experiences as a regular blog series on Radiant Veracity. As recent college graduates and active job seekers, topics will range from how they met (they’ve been friends for two years) to their weekly assignments, victories and struggles. The following is their second post in the series.
It all began with a Tweet:
@StephanieALloyd I am looking for an intern to work with me on event planning and coordinating as well as publishing.
When Stephanie Lloyd almost jokingly posted the tweet above, she was unsure if she had any real intention to take on interns. However, after receiving three replies from interested candidates (from her now Interns – Paul Eulette, Stephanie Perrett and Beth Farrar) within mere minutes, she began to legitimately consider the prospect. After all, who couldn’t use a few more hours in the day?
Beth had not been a follower of @StephanieALloyd but was fortunate to receive a copy of the post from a former colleague. (Note: This is why you stay in touch with previous co-workers, supervisors, etc.!) Beth immediately sent a reply, so quickly in fact that a typo slipped in.
@replies quickly turned to DMs, which soon led to e-mails, and before Beth knew what had happened, she had a phone interview scheduled two days after Stephanie Lloyd had posted her request. Unsure of what to expect, she eagerly anticipated a call from a perfect stranger, known only through Twitter.
In the meantime, unbeknownst to Beth, Stephanie Perrett had been following @StephanieALloyd for about six months. How she initially began following her is still a mystery, but it was most likely through reading retweets from other followers. The two Stephanie’s had connected a few times, commenting on things they had in common (their love of animals, social media and their name, of course) or how much Stephanie P. had enjoyed a blog post on Radiant Veracity.
Stephanie Perrett (are you confused with all the Stephanie’s yet?) found out about Stephanie Lloyd’s post from Beth’s @reply on Twitter. Doing a little backtracking, she found Stephanie’s original cry for help and immediately responded with a DM. Not wanting to interfere with a good friend’s job prospect, Stephanie wrote the following to Stephanie Lloyd:
DM: StephanieALloyd Would love to talk about internship. HOWEVER, I am great friends with @BFarrar and she is simply amazing
To Stephanie Perrett’s excitement, Stephanie Lloyd responded saying that there was enough work for a few interns and that she would love to talk further via e-mail and eventually over the phone. The interview process was beginning and it was just hours after Stephanie Lloyd had posted her intern inquiry.
Beth (still unaware her friend had also set up an interview with Stephanie L.) and Stephanie P. were just waiting for the phone to ring.
Moral of the Story: Pursue every lead (but don’t be annoying). Engage in social media, and use it wisely. Don’t be a stranger. Ask for help. Stay on good terms with former colleagues (and friends). Be tactful and use personal ethics when applying for the same position as a good friend.
