This morning @katriord tweeted this:
Welcome new followers. I don’t autofollow. If you want me to follow you, and I’m not yet, please message me, engage in conversation.
I retweeted it because I have the very same philosophy.
Want to know why I don’t autofollow? Because I don’t want to read tweets like this:
now it is on to the computer to make money at BestmaverickmoneymakerIam.com!!!
→ I will show you how to MAKE MONEY FAST!!
→ Follow me!
→ I sell Avon!
→ I sell houses!
→ I sell ANYTHING
→ Buy my ebook!
→ Buy my ANYTHING
→ Tweeting live from ANY place of worship
→ Tweeting ANY sporting event play-by-play
→ Full review of natural health products for Men and Women
→ Skin Care
→ Weight Loss
Ok.
Now.
In all seriousness…I have nothing against Avon, health products, sports, or religion, and I’m sure your ebook is lovely…it’s just not what I’m looking for on Twitter.
Everyone is on Twitter for their own reasons. We all have different things to offer and we’re looking for different things, as well. One of the best things about Twitter is that each individual can create their own community, and everyone’s Twitter experience will be unique.
I’m on Twitter to meet and interact with people with common interests, share ideas and information, help others when I can, and to have a little fun every once in a while.
Why are you on Twitter? (And what are your Twitter pet peeves?)

I joined Twitter because I thought it would be a great way to announce specials & new menu items at my husband’s new restaurant.
Then I started following great people and realized the full potential of Twitter. I truly enjoy Twitter for the posts that make me giggle and the ability to help people by re-tweeting job leads, information about charities and random questions like “any advice for X?”
Pet peeves: really high-volume tweeters • Weird spellings – like “phine” instead of “fine” – that’s an extra character, so why?!!! • Also, I don’t want to feel like I’m reading someone’s private diary. Have some discretion, people!
Hear,Hear! I couldn’t agree more. I started on Twitter because I found out that one person I wanted to connect with regarding a specific issue was Twittering and I thought it might provide a way to contact the individual. I DM’d but in the process I have found this great community of like-minded friends, as well as not-so-like-minded individuals with whom I can engage in respectful exchange of ideas.
My pet peeve: When all a person/organization tweets are the same advertisements for their business over and over again. “I have a tool for …, call me at/DM me, etc.” Also, yes, really high volume tweeters who, if individuals, seem to think we want to hear every thought that crosses their mind (definitely not waiting for replies) or if organizations, post 15 or 20 consecutive posts without a break (job announcements, ads, etc) which push all of the conversational tweets right off my screen.
I completely agree. I’m on Twitter for the endless stream of information, ideas, and interesting people.
I like your comment that “one of the best things about Twitter is that each individual can create their own community, and everyone’s Twitter experience will be unique.” It’s easy to jump in and use Twitter in whichever way you want. For some reason it’s hard to engage conversation in FB, but Twitter’s live stream of information makes it extremely easy to find interesting conversation. I use FB for small talk and Twitter for info/idea sharing and conversation. FB is like a high school reunion (anticlimactic) and Twitter is like going away to a large college (endless opportunities).
Thanks for putting this into words – I could not agree more. Some of the trivial chatter I don’t mind. It is nice to see the day to day conversations. I am pretty careful about who I follow. I often check the followcost.com before adding someone too – lets me know when I am about to add someone who is high volume.
