Interview with Executive Recruiter Jenny DeVaughn: How she uses Twitter for recruiting

As part of an ongoing series in which I’m interviewing recruiting professionals I asked Jenny DeVaughn, a self-described Executive Recruiter and Social Media Enthusiast based in Atlanta, Georgia, how she uses Twitter.

How do you use Twitter in your recruiting efforts?

“Twitter is one of the many tools in my social recruiting toolkit. I use Twitter to identify and engage candidates and clients alike. It continually amazes me how 140 characters can have so many positive effects.”

Have you found success meeting new candidates on Twitter?

“Yes!”

What are you doing that’s working well?

“I use several Netweaving tips by Bob Littell and try to pay-it-forward first when developing relationships. It is so important to ask a new connection, “How can I help you?” instead of “What can you do for me?” when interacting online or in-person.”

How has your approach evolved over time?

“It took time to learn the proper Twitter etiquette and also how to redirect the traffic that I receive to get the best results. Luckily, we have many users on Twitter that are willing to share their best practices.

When I first started Twitter, I was dumping and selling my open positions and services. Now, I engage and give to my target candidates and clients. I’m also pleasantly surprised at the rewards of investing my time on Twitter with leaders in recruiting and several other industries. It has directly lead to new friendships, beneficial partnerships, speaking engagements, webinars, workshops, training opportunities and much more!”

What advice would you give to people who want to use Twitter in their job search efforts?

“First, stop using Twitter as a place to announce that you are unemployed. Even if you are desperate and willing to take any position, you will get a better response if you maintain your professional demeanor and a positive confidence level. It is important to tweet about articles, news, activities, people, blog posts, conferences, meetings, etc. that your profession or industry would also find interesting. When using Twitter and other social media tools, one should write as if your competitor, boss/future boss and most esteemed relative is going to read everything that you write.”
